Schools profile in CSP

In 2001 the Community Schools’ Program (CSP) supported one school, Loe Khee Primary school, situated in Kler Lwee Htoo district, Saw Tee Township in Loe Khee village, in Karen State. Students attended from kinder garden to standard two, and there were had two teachers and 35 students. With the funding from CSP, Loe Khee Primary school was able to extend to standard 4.

Two more schools received funding in 2002 and by 2005 the “Enfants du Mékong” started to fund four new schools. In 2006 an increasing number of schools were being funded by the programme, deeming it necessary for the project to change its name. Originally called the “IDP school in Karen State”, the schools were now united under the banner of the ‘Community Schools’ Program’. Since then, the Community Schools’ Program donors have been established through word of mouth and through referrals.

Up until the CSP was founded, many children in the villages would have to travel very far to go to school and would often have to pay a lot of money to attend. Some schools were run in villages, but had to charge money for the children going to school.

All 33 schools supported by the CSP were pre-existing and run by parents and village members. However they lacked the basic necessities. CSP has ensured that all the basic necessities for each school are met and has strived to ensure that these schools become sustainable for the future. All 33 schools are situated in Kler Lwee Htoo district, Pa Pun district, Doo Tha Htoo district and Doo Pa Yar district,Kaw Ka Rit and Myawaddy township in Karen State in Burma/ Myanmar.

As acting Program Director of the CSP, Eh Thwa is responsible for liaising with donors and schools by collecting, translating and providing bi-annual reports for each donor. The Program Director facilitates the annual meeting for school representatives, and researches concrete ways in which to improve the Program work. Examples include increasing access to water and sanitation, building proper and suitable buildings, and establishing reliable financial support. Schools have also been able to employ more teachers and therefore enroll more students as a result of the funding.

Now a day, the Community Schools’ Program helped 27 primary schools (kinder garden to standard 4), 5 middle schools (kinder garden to Standard 8) and 1 high school(kinder garden to Standard 10).

In total, the program provides education to 3,093 students and funds 180 teachers across 33 schools.
